Post-modern anti-semitism: proselytizing

Posted by: Diane Weber Bederman

The existential threats to Israel are maDiane Weber Bedermanny but there’s one we’re ignoring at our own peril: Proselytizing. Granted, proselytizing isn’t in your face like rockets, terrorists or BDS, but that doesn’t make it any less dangerous to Am Yisrael. Michael Oren said: “I have no statistics on the size of the Messianic community, but I think certainly that the State of Israel wants the Jewish people to remain Jewish…” While noting that “Israel greatly values its relationship with the evangelical community and other Christian communities in the world,” Oren cautioned that, “we are very sensitive to the notion of proselytizing — very sensitive.”

Are we very sensitive?

I’m a very sensitive secular Jew adamantly opposed to proselyting. One doesn’t have to be a Torah observant Jew to be appalled by the arrogance and the sense of entitlement of Jews for Jesus, Christian Zionists, Messianic Jews and Evangelicals in Israel who build their churches and Bible colleges, missionize in the streets of Jerusalem and on the beaches of Tel Aviv, sell Israeli land by the square foot on Daystar Television, and then turn to the United States of America to admonish Israel for discrimination against them in order to change the Law of return to include them-Christians-hiding behind the word Jew.

They’re so good at what they do they fool the brightest amongst us including Shurat HaDin, an organization that works with Western intelligence agencies, law enforcement branches and a network of volunteer lawyers across the globe to fight the anti-semitism of the BDS economic war against Israel. Their work meshes with the plans of Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked.

Shurat HaDin was taken in by Messianic Jew, Calev Myers and asked him to be a lead speaker at the event introducing him to 70 lawyers from seven countries. Spokeswoman Alona Tomer told me they weren’t aware of his background.

Calev Myers, leader of Jerusalem Institute for Justice (JIJ), works to change the Law of Return to Israel in order to open the door to people who are Jews for Jesus. He is a modern-day Janus and makes a perfect Trojan Horse because he hides his primary purpose. If all you knew about Myers were his incredible YouTube presentations and his biography on his website, you too would think he was a gift to the Jews. You wouldn’t think that his real purpose is abusing democracy in Israel to de-Judaize Israel-the only Jewish State.

A little research and you discover that other face of Myers, a man “in the forefront of key legal battles for the rights of Messianic Jews” in Israel and abroad. He describes himself as “biologically from a Jewish background. I identify with the Jewish people. I celebrate the Jewish holidays. I see myself as an integral part of the Jewish culture, but I believe in Jesus as the promised Messiah based on Jewish Scriptures.” This is the same man who said, “I was not intending to be the Messianic Jewish Robin Hood … but God had other plans.” In 2008 he was already focusing on “further action to spread knowledge of Jesus,” when he was speaking to the graduating class of Southeastern University in Lakeland Florida. “[G]raduates can help Israeli believers in Jesus by educating their congregations, praying for Israel and aligning themselves with Messianic Jewish congregations.”

He proudly fights discrimination against religious minorities; Messianic Jews, Jews for Jesus, Christian Zionists; people who call themselves Jewish despite the fact they believe that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah.

Calev Myers presents himself on his website as “Human Rights Champion and Israel Advocate,” and “General Counsel to over 90 non-profit organizations in Israel focusing upon education, humanitarian needs, social justice and civil rights,” without a word of his real work-changing the laws regarding who is a Jew through the Law of Return. Not a word about his advocating for Messianic Jews (Christians) in Israel and America. And if you bring those details forward, you’ll probably receive a note from him, threatening a law suit, like I did after I wrote “Serpent in the Garden” in Times of Israel where he contributes op-eds. He didn’t frighten me. But he frightened Times of Israel who removed a later blog that referred to Myers.

Myers celebrated on Twitter and Tumblr sharing his good news with his Messianic followers. And then Times of Israel refused to post another blog. If proselytizers are so harmless why do they threaten with law suits? And why do Jewish organizations back down unless they’ve already given these Messianic organizations enough power to affect the Jewish agenda? I was removed from a Jewish organization in Canada because of the power of International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem (ICEJ), one of the largest missionizing organizations in the world with more than 70 chapters.

It was Calev Myers of the Jerusalem Institute for Justice who turned to the USA with his complaint about discrimination against “religious minorities” in Israel. America took notice in their International Religious Freedom Report for 2013: Israel and the Occupied Territories.

They wrote that Israel’s Ministry of Interior continues “to deny citizenship or deny or delay services such as child registration and issuance of social benefits, identity cards, and passports to some citizens based on their religious beliefs, according to the Jerusalem Institute of Justice, an NGO. This included cases of individuals who immigrated under the Law of Return as Jews but were discovered to hold Messianic or Christian beliefs.” The report states “Messianic Jews and Jehovah’s Witnesses were reportedly harassed regularly by Yad L’Achim and Lev L’Achim, Jewish religious organizations opposed to missionary activity and intermarriage.”

Since when does Israel, the Jewish State, need America’s stamp of approval regarding the definition of “Jew,” religious freedom and missionary activity in Israel?

Myers is no “lone wolf.” He’s associated with, amongst others, International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem (ICEJ), King of Kings Community Jerusalem (KKCJ), Michael Brown, Wayne Hilsden, Jonathan Bernis, Jack Hayford, George Morrison, Jonathan Wiggins, Sandra Teplinsky, all part of the global effort called FIRM — the Fellowship of Israel-Related Ministries– under the banner “For Christ has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when in his own body on the Cross he broke down the wall that separated us.”

FIRM’s “The Stand with Israel Movement” is worldwide, “Gathering together with others that have the same heart and same mind to see God’s purposes fulfilled, to see Israel supported, to see the Jewish people come back to their own Messiah,”

In 2008 Calev Myers, Chief Counsel for JIJ, represented “Rabbi Jamie Cowan’s (now Cohen) daughter, Amy in a ground breaking case which made it possible for several messianic Christians to make aliyah because they were not Jews as defined by the Law, but rather because they were the offspring of Jewish fathers. At the time Amy Cowen declared:

“This legal precedent not only guarantees rights to those represented in the case, but also paves the way and opens immense doors to unhindered Messianic Jewish aliyah (with Jewish ancestry on the father’s side).”

Calev Myers is the de facto spokesman for Israel’s 100 messianic congregations who wants to shine a light “on a phobia that exists toward messianic Jews in Israel,”

Here’s the phobia: “The Jewish people as a whole & those Jewish people who identify with Yeshua/Jesus, King of the Jews, suffer an age-old rift stemming out of everything from simple misunderstanding to raging spiritual blindness & outright persecution. The modern state of Israel, born out of the heart & word of God, as well as the ashes of the Holocaust, has historically denied citizenship to those who identify with Yeshua”.

It was Calev Myers who declared to reporters “… Israel is the only Western country where basic freedom of religion is denied.”

According to JewishIsrael the Jerusalem Institute of Justice recently issued pro-bono advice including “It is also advised not to discuss your personal beliefs with the representatives of the Ministry of Interior (MOI).” The advice is widely disseminated online and in email, especially to the Messianic leaders in the USA to share with Christian Yeshua believers who want to make Aliyah.

And this is the man Shurat HaDIn chose as a keynote speaker at their conference in Israel. Shurat HaDin, an organization established to fight the anti-semitism of BDS, has unwittingly given the Glatt Kosher stamp of approval to Calev Myers who may seen by some because of his words and deeds as one of the many incarnations of post-modern anti-semitism. He is but one of many Christian proselytizers who have the audacity to get involved in the definition of “who is a Jew” and are killing us softly because we have in our arrogance, turned a blind eye to an enemy within.
